- In India, Triclosan is used as an ingredient in several toothpaste brands and many other personal care products. Colgate uses Triclosan only in our Colgate Total® toothpaste, where it delivers important benefits and complies with the prescribed 0.3% limit set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
- Triclosan is not considered to cause cancer in humans. For Colgate Total®, multiple studies were reviewed by the US FDA and later by regulators in Europe, Canada and Australia and all concluded that Triclosan in Colgate Total® is safe. Beyond our toothpaste, regulators around the world who have reviewed the issue of carcinogenicity have concluded that Triclosan is not a human cancer risk.
- With respect to the University of Massachusetts Amherst study, Colgate scientists carefully reviewed this study and believe it has limited relevance for human health. Our analysis shows that each of the three dosing levels in the tests were over 200 times higher than exposure from brushing with a Triclosan containing toothpaste. The majority of the findings were observed at levels 1,900 times higher than exposure from brushing. Further, mice process Triclosan in an entirely different way than humans and have completely different microflora, further limiting the relevance of the study to human health.
- There are more published, peer-reviewed clinical studies of Colgate Total® than of any other toothpaste in the world. The efficacy and safety of Colgate Total® is supported by more than 90 clinical studies, involving over 20,000 people, and a broad set of safety evaluations. Our research has been shared with regulatory agencies around the world who have accepted Triclosan’s safe and effective use in toothpaste.
